The making of the FSC-infographic
“How much does it cost to make an infographic?”, is a question I get a lot. Unfortunately not a question that’s easy to answer. Before I can get you an accurate price, I need to know what you want to tell, what kind of ‘look and feel’ you’re looking for and how much data (illustrations) it will hold.
Let’s go to my kitchen. See how I did this. The meal we’re preparing is an infographic for FSC-Nederland. That’s right. The Forest Stewardship Council. An independent, non-governmental, not for profit organization established to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests and founded in Toronto in 1993.
They wanted me to design an infographic for the Dutch market. They’ve send me two A4’s with information. In short it said: “This is the current state of forrest worldwide. This is how an FSC-forrest works. This is how we control it. This is our ‘call to action’.” Great! I got busy. This is what I send them and what it would cost.
They understood what I was going for and we had a deal. WhooHoo! This will take me 2 days (more like 3!) days to make. Especially the first two illustrations (current state and future) would take a lot of work. Unfortunately I misread the part ‘You have to ask for it’. Because this infographic is meant for the ‘higher up’. Construction companies, timber companies and local governments. So this one didn’t make it…
That doesn’t mean that you, dear reader, shouldn’t buy FCS.
Off course you should!
It took several versions before we got it right. It’s important to pay close attention to the nitty gritty. Does it work? Is this the message we want to send out? Well, apparently it works! Several offices are being upgraded because of the poster-version (yes, there is a poster-version, 30 cm x 100 cm) that’s hanging there. A proud moment… Here she is (English version here)!
The digital version has already been send to several partners. At this moment the site of FSC-Nederland is being rebuild. When it’s done, you’ll find it over there too.
